“Aww darn it I got Stillnovo!”

That might not sound cool to a younger generation but the truth is that the reigning trend of-the-moment is: if it’s retro it’s in. This style has become bigger over the years, and even gone beyond interior design to further its claws into every aspect of day to day life: fashion.

Nevertheless, the majority of the population seems to be unware of the existence of one of these retro design styles. Mid century modern style has been noticed more than a decade ago with the help of popular shows like Mad Men, that 70’s show, etc. This style corresponds to a period of roughly two and a half decades in the middle of the 20th century, from the mid-1940s to 1970. Its characteristic uncomplicated and fresh lines arose from a desire to propel postwar America into the modern era and to enjoy the chance to regenerate buildings and redecorate interiors with a whole new perspective.

Mid Century Modern may not have a cool sounding label like StillNovo or Retro Chic or Art Deco, but don’t hit the snooze button just yet. Of all the areas of interior design, there is one in particular where Mid-Century Modern shines, lighting. Lighting fixtures from this era are so striking that they’ve become design motifs and are frequently used as inspiration.

A small piece of advice before running out to buy vintage lighting: don’t let the light fixtures compete against each other because it will create an unnecessary, busy space. Instead, choose one for each room, and let them be the star of their individual space. Mid century modern has proven to be a luminary of timeless design.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Space Exploration is a recurrent theme of the Mid-Century light fixtures like for example the Sputnik Chandelier. The early era of space exploration began in the early 1940s. The journey into unknown territories has often been used as a proxy competition for geopolitical rivalries like the “Space Race” between the Soviet Union and the United States and the Cold War. It was during this time that Atomic Age design became popular and instantly recognizable, with a use of atomic motifs and space age symbols.

This chandelier by DelightFULL is the perfect example of a contemporary descendant of retro sphere lighting, The Atomic suspension lamp is a spot-on interpretation of the atomic age design. Brass material was very popular in the post II World War, and in the modern Era there is no shortage of designs that incorporate this metal. Although, brass lighting has a certain charm to it.

  • The Art Deco lamp is a very famous design flashback from the 1950s. Over the year, this

iconic design has endured. The series Mad Men (maybe you have heard of it?) has several enhancing the set design of the show. If you want to go retro this is the classy way to do it.
