For the home DIYer, a proper collection of tools and equipment is of the utmost importance. There aren’t many things more frustrating than getting half-way through a project only to discover you need to make a run to the department store, or hire a handyman to finish the job. So if you’re one who likes to address projects around the house on your own, here’s a look at some of the tools you should have on hand to make any job as easy as possible.
A Basic Toolbox
The most important thing to keep on hand is a basic toolbox. This shouldn’t be a disorganized drawer full of rusty old tools or a plastic bin overflowing with random odds and ends from past projects.
Rather, it should be legitimate, fully stocked toolbox that can be used to help you handle most basic tasks around the house. Lifehacker took a look into what exactly this means and put together a guide to building a toolbox for every level of DIY. Combining some of the ideas and items suggested there (or simply buying a thoroughly put-together toolbox) will get you off to a great start.
Some tools don’t fit in a box. They may be a little bit more expensive, but they can also significantly simplify some of the jobs frequently involved with DIY projects. Consider, for instance, having a pillar drill in your garage or toolshed. It’s a little more expensive than most tools, but it can safely and effectively accomplish some of the tasks that an ordinary handheld power drill just can’t get done.
Leading UK trade tool site Screwfix explains that pillar drills are invaluable for a smooth finish and safe working, simply because they can be used with so much stability and precision. Whether you opt for a bench or floor model, you’ll have a powerful drill set firmly in place for your more demanding drilling needs. This is merely one example, but it’s a nice explanation of how a larger power tool or mechanism can significantly improve your home DIY capability.
Just as you may want a few larger power tools or stationary devices for accomplishing certain task, a few heavy-duty cleaners can also be terrific additions to your home DIY arsenal. A lot of home improvement jobs and other projects such as painting or remodeling often require thorough cleaning before the actual work is underway.
And for major cleaning efforts (particularly outdoors), a power tool can speed things up considerably. Think, for instance, about ordering a power washer or a power sander to have on hand, rather than finding yourself scrubbing or sanding large outdoor areas by hand next time you attack a job.
Finally, don’t forget about the items you’ll need to stay safe while undergoing home improvement or DIY projects. Generally speaking, you don’t need to armor yourself too thoroughly for the average DIY job around the house, but it’s still best to have some of these types of items on hand, which is why so many of them made it onto a Popular Mechanics list of 20 tools for remodeling.
Protective goggles, headphones to muffle loud noises, coveralls, gloves, and even face masks can all come in very handy for some of the more involved projects you might take on around the house. And stocking up on them in advance is a good way to ensure you don’t get complacent about safety later on.
Taking all of this into consideration, you can build up a formidable tool and equipment arsenal and be equipped for any DIY job that might come your way.
