How couldn’t we? This prefab modern home sits tucked away on a quiet plot of land just a ferry ride away from Seattle. The owners wanted their inner sanctuary to match their outer sanctuary. Windows are large and kept clear of obstruction.

Painting walls in white or pale shades will make your home look brighter and bounce the light around. Glossy and polished surfaces also help. So ditch the carpet and replace with wooden floors or tiles that have a subtle reflective sheen. And don’t forget mirrors. They can reflect, and thereby increase the amount of light in a room. So hang wall mirrors strategically opposite windows.

Mid-century modern

Midcentury modern style reappeared on our radar screens more than a decade ago, but the wildly popular show Mad Men has pushed it even further into the limelight. Just as the name implies, it spanned a period of roughly two and a half decades in the middle of the 20th century, from the mid-1940s to 1970. It’s uncomplicated, fresh aesthetic arose from a desire to propel postwar America into the modern era and recast design through a bold new lens.

Midcentury modern’s emphasis on pared-down forms, contemporary patterns, natural materials and a seamless flow between indoors and out create a medley of functional comfort and chic style. The look bridges the organic and the man-made, with one foot in the natural world and the other in brave new territory that still has the power to surprise us today.

Contemporary

Contemporary by definition means “existing, occurring, or living at the same time; belonging to the same time”. And that is explicitly the same for the use of the term in interior design. The finishes would use a lot of natural elements such as fir or cedar and stone. The finishing details and furniture are in ornate and use clean lines.
