You must have notice that I’m becoming a great admirer of Mexican design. I’ve been writing some articles about fantastic architectural projects in México, (check this post – “Home design around the world: Casa Aurelia – México” ) and Mariangel Coghlan, one of the best interior designers in Mexico gave an exclusive interview for this blog (check it here – Exclusive interview with Mariangel Coghlan – the beautiful Mexican style“) Today, at Home Design Ideas, you will read a fantastic interview with another top Mexican interior designer: Gloria Cortina, whose goal in the professional life is to put the Mexican design on the map!
You don’t want to miss this article!
– How and why did you get into the design Industry?
My first job was the day I turned 21, I knocked on the door of the only “Interior Design Studios” in Mexico City in the 90’s called Diarq. I worked there for two years before going to do my master degree in Parsons School of Design, NYC.
– How would you describe your design style? Do you have a signature touch with your designs?
I definitely work in a contemporary style. I respect and admire prior design periods and in this way, I’m trying to consolidate mine.
– What do you love about being a designer?
Everything. I decided I wanted to be an ID when I was 14. I asked permission to remodel my bedroom and I did it 3 times in a row with my own two hands, vintage pieces, rescue pieces and a lot of passion.
– Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Nature. I rely very much on my creative process, it’s very intuitive.
– What are some of your most popular designs/projects? Tell us a bit about some of your designs/projects and what you love about them. What’s your favorite and why?
My favorite project is a Ranch that I renovated outside of Mexico City. Not only the architecture was done by one of the best architects in Mexico (Mauricio de Tuddo) but also I had the chance to do landscape design (which I LOVE) it took two years to complete and my client had absolute trust in what we were doing! The outcome was outstanding.
– Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
Something really exciting for me is that I’m developing a small collection of signature pieces for a gallery in New York. Also, I’m finishing my first book published by Rizzoli next year.
– What colors, textures and furniture pieces do you love the most?
It all depends on the day! I have a joke with my daughter that we ask each other, what is your favorite color TODAY??? Hahahaaa!
I really admire all furniture designers, but I identify with clean but warm lines.
– If someone gave to you an empty blank room, how would you style it?
Depends on who is going to live in it.
– What décor tips would you like to give to Home Design Ideas readers?
The only tip y can give is ” follow your instincts” you know more than you think.
– Describe yourself in three words.
Creative, client-driven and authentic.
– What are your design dreams/goals?
To put Mexican Design on the map.
Gloria Cortina‘s work is fantastic and you can tell that she aims to be of-of the best. With the work of designers like Gloria and Mariangel Coghlan, Mexican design has everything it needs to succeed.
I hope you have enjoyed this interview.
I want to say “That you so much” to Gloria Cortina for the amazing opportunity to have her in my blog!
