A few weeks ago i was surfing the net for some ideas for this blog and i came across the work of Mariangel Coghlan…it was love at first sight. I fell in love for her style, for the colors she uses in every single room…and i thought “i have to get an interview with her”. And here it is!
You can’t miss this extremely nice interview with one of the top Mexican interior designers. I’m sure that Mariangel’s projects and words will captivate you!
I want to say thanks to Mariangel Coghlan and Zayda Muñoz Loya for making this interview possible.
– How and why did you get into the design Industry?
I was attracted to spaces from a very young age. I remember drawing plans before I went to elementary school, playing like I was remodeling and fixing up my doll house, planning and rudimentarily manufacturing a tree house, and obviously playing with wooden blocks and building things. I was caught up by design and that is what I do, because I am passionate about it.
– How would you describe your design style? Do you have a signature touch with your designs?
My guiding principle in design is the concept FUSION+MEXICO, which results from reflecting on the international interdependency of design trends in the light of the wonderful shapes, colors, and natural resources which Mexico, in particular, has to offer.
– What do you love about being a designer?
The possibility to be creative, to innovate, and especially, to reinvent spaces in order to make something extraordinary out of something ordinary.
– Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I am inspired by everything around me, by my country’s visual wealth and by the beautiful places I see when I leave Mexico. I love to travel, observe, and enjoy beautiful landscapes and cities. I always take pictures of everything; it is an exercise for me through which I edit that which calls my attention and I capture that which is attractive for me.
– What are some of your most popular designs/projects? Tell us a bit about some of your designs/projects and what you love about them. What’s your favourite and why?
Each Project I have worked in is special in some way; my favorite is the one I am working on at the time. I have been fortunate because I have had nice experiences with my clients which make me enjoy my job immensely and which make me think that all those hours devoted to my work are worthwhile.
I am especially excited when I see that a job well done contributes to my clients’ well-being, and when they tell me this, I feel great.
– Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
I have several very interesting projects at this time, but there is specifically an apartment which I am very excited about because we are designing everything: the kitchen, the bathrooms, the lighting, the bedrooms. We are going to modify the distribution and all the materials, and we are going to deliver it ready to live in and fully equipped.
I generally design with a lot of color and this time we are doing it all in a monochrome in black and gray.
– What colors, textures and furniture pieces do you love the most?
I am very attracted by color and texture in general. I like to combine and contrast different pieces; in every project I have different preferences which take into consideration my clients’ tastes and habits.
I believe design should be dependent upon people and that my purpose is to help and collaborate so that they can live a better life.
– If someone gave to you an empty blank room, how would you style it?
Having a blank room is a great opportunity. When this happens, I try to make something amazing. Before I start designing, I talk a lot with my clients in order to achieve a space that surpasses their expectations.
– What décor tips would you like to give to Home Design Ideas readers?
The most important part of design for me is to improve our way of life. Investing in our home: time, effort, and, when possible, some economic resources, is always a good idea; our goal has to be to create beautiful spaces for a happy home. Beauty, like kindness, is an irreplaceable part of happiness.
– Describe yourself in three words.
Passionate, noble and committed.
– What are your design dreams/goals?
My dream is to have the best design firm, always capable of generating fresh, new, original ideas.
To edit one design book per year and to showcase a collection in Milan.
