🆕 Luxury Fashion Turns to Interior Designers and Architects to Appeal to Lifestyle Consumers
Imagine a fun-and caffeine-filled week of parties and shows in Milan. Versace, Fendi, and Prada are the talk of the town. Everyone’s abuzz about what Raf Simons is up to. No, it’s not Milan Fashion Week we’re talking about—it’s Milan Design Week. It’s just one of the examples of the way fashion houses are increasingly eying ‘home’ as a relatively untapped opportunity to move beyond consumers’ closets, or in some cases, capitalizing on the design aficionados in their core consumer base by bringing celebrated designers and architects into the fashion world.
Perhaps the biggest overlap of design enthusiasts and the world of high fashion was at Versace’s FuoriSalone exhibit. The storied—and famously private—Versace Palazzo at Via Gesu was open for the public to view the newest lines in the Versace Home collection. To create the set for the exhibition, Donatella hand-picked New York City’s own Sasha Bikoff. Only time will tell how purveyors of upmarket fashion will continue to innovate in how they choose to extend their distinctive lifestyle experience into the categories of home and decor.
🆕 Eco-Park and Urban Beach Pier 35 Opens to the Public in Manhattan
As April showers subside in New York City, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a new addition to the waterfront: the SHoP Architects- and Ken Smith Workshop-designed Pier 35, an outdoor public space with the public—and the environment—in mind.
Pier 35 is part of Manhattan’s East River waterfront esplanade project, a two-mile stretch of public-use areas that are denoted by a series of subsequent piers in Lower Manhattan. The piers provide outdoor recreation space, community-oriented programming, and conservation and sustainability measures for the waterfront. While parts of the pier were opened to the public in winter of 2018, it opened in its entirety on April 19.
🆕 Everything We Know So Far About the Efforts to Rebuild Notre-Dame Cathedral
By now, the fire that spread through the attic of Notre-Dame Cathedral, toppling its beloved spire, has been well-documented. While French authorities were able to subdue the blaze late Monday night, the process of rebuilding the 12th-century landmark—a UNESCO world heritage site for nearly 30 years—will take much longer.
The two largest French luxury conglomerates were among the first to publicly pledge considerable sums in support of rebuilding the cathedral. The Pinault family, who owns the Kering group (parent company to luxury heavyweights like Gucci, Saint-Laurent, Alexander McQueen, and more) was the first to publicly announce their support, with François-Henri Pinault pledging to donate €100 million on Monday.
🆕 Cindy Crawford on Hand for Opening of New Cosentino City Los Angeles Center
The recent opening of the Cosentino City Los Angeles Center, in the heart of West Hollywood’s design district, was a big deal. First, there was the presence of supermodel Cindy Crawford, Cosentino’s Silestone brand ambassador, who was on hand to cut the ribbon after just inking another contract.
Equally photogenic was the $1.7 million property itself: 4,208 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, including 3,529 square feet of showroom to display the Spanish producer’s collections of Silestone and Dekton natural quartz surfacing.
