1. Sweet, powdery pastels and monochromatic look

While designers are often lauded for their inventive color combinations, sometimes it’s the simplest statements that have the biggest impact. Take the monochromatic look, seen on the Spring runways at Gucci, Stella McCartney, and Carolina Herrera. Harper’s Bazaar finds the season’s top shades are sweet as sugar — from lavender to pistachio to petal pink. The pastels come into play in Amy Fine Collins’s Manhattan entry where pale pinks, greens, yellows and blues come together in a rug by the designer (and color master) Gene Meyer. Flowers atop the console and a painting in similar hues add to the trend.

2. Pink tones

ELLE spotted unexpected pink accents peppered throughout spring collections. There’s noting like a pop of color to brighten neutrals and soften athletic, edgy looks.

Just take a look at the London apartment of Jimmy Choo’s founder Tamara Mellon! Interior decorator Martyn Lawrence-Bullard mixed a vintage Jansen desk, a 1960s Eames chair upholstered in hot-pink leather and a Warhol print of Grace Kelly, proving that one bright color can add interest and complete a look.

4. Scandinavian Style

Harper’s Bazaar’s latest trend report points out that “white’s buttoned-up structured side rears its sleek head on spring’s catwalks, getting architectural takes at Jil Sander, smart layers at Rag & Bone and cool, crisp collars at Alexander Wang”.

Carlos Aparicio’s Miami home

Carlos Aparicio cites as inspiration the work of his forerunners Josef Hoffmann, Adolf Loos, and Gio Ponti — early-20th-century architects who obsessively oversaw their projects down to the design of the doorknobs. Like these Renaissance men, Aparicio conceives a house as a whole entity. His vision for each space encompasses everything from the floor plans to the light fixtures to the colors of the walls. In the living room of architect Carlos Aparicio’s Miami home the sofa is custom made, the armchairs are by Jean-Michel Frank and the 1920s light fixture is by Carl Hallberg; the columns are of French limestone, the rugs are midcentury Swedish and the flooring is coral limestone.

5. Bold, geometric black & white

When spotting trends on Spring 2014 runways, Harper’s Bazaar found black and white in sharp geometric shapes that took the simple color combination to another level. Designers like Stella McCartney, Proenza Schouler and even Chanel had their inspirations from the palette. The Black & White look can make a strong impression for private and commercial interiors as well – it’s a classic. The style looks especially sharp with the use of bold lines. High contrast stripes and geometric pattern along with some sparkling table details and chrome lamp bases are details that can make the interiors stand out. Jean Paul Gaultier got together with Roche Bobois and created a line of home furnishings mixing black & white patterns and the low seating design. It’s very casual but in a room with elegant molding, high ceilings and windows, the overall look is lavishing.
